Job Description

About the Opportunity

At John Paul College, sustainability is a shared commitment across our vibrant 33-hectare campus - from our classrooms to our grounds. And we need a dedicated, hands-on person to help bring it to life, every single day.

We're looking for a committed and community-minded Sustainability Support Officer to join our Property Services team. This is a newly created role that sits at the heart of JPC's environmental responsibility efforts, helping us divert waste from landfill, keep our campus clean and compliant, and build a genuine culture of sustainability among our 2,400-strong student community and 600 staff.

About the Role

This is a permanent role, working full-time hours during term-time only, with the regular working hours being Monday – Friday, 9.30am – 5.45pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work outside these hours to support College events and needs.

You'll be out across the campus every day - collecting, sorting, and managing waste streams, monitoring contamination levels, and making sure everything ends up exactly where it should.

If you like tangible outcomes, a bit of movement in your day, and the satisfaction of knowing your work genuinely makes a difference to the planet, this role has your name on it.

The Key Responsibilities of the Sustainability Support Officer will include:

  • Collecting and transporting waste from across the College to the JPC Waste Sorting area.
  • Accurately sorting waste streams - including general waste, recycling, organics and specialty waste - to maximise resource recovery and minimise landfill contribution.
  • Identifying and removing contaminants from recycling and organics streams to ensure compliance with waste-processing requirements.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness, organisation and safety of all waste sorting and storage areas, keeping bins, signage and equipment in good working order.
  • Monitoring waste volumes, contamination levels and sorting outcomes, and recording data to support sustainability reporting and continuous improvement.
  • Assisting with building-wide sustainability programs, including waste audits, recycling campaigns and new waste management initiatives.
  • Providing clear, approachable guidance to staff and students on correct waste-sorting practices and promoting sustainable behaviours across the College.
  • Following all WH&S procedures related to manual handling, waste equipment and hazardous materials, and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental regulations.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve waste management processes and contribute ideas for better waste reduction outcomes.

About You

You're someone who genuinely cares about the environment and takes real pride in the work you do. You're reliable, physically active, and you bring a positive, community-oriented attitude to your work.

You'll bring:

  • Sound knowledge of waste streams - recycling, organics, general waste and specialty waste -  with practical experience in correct sorting and contamination identification.
  • Physical capacity to manoeuvre bins and waste materials as a regular part of the role – however, regular heavy lifting will not be required.
  • A genuine passion for sustainability and commitment to environmental outcomes and reducing the College's landfill footprint.
  • The ability to collect, record and track waste-related data to support sustainability reporting.
  • Sound knowledge of safe manual handling, appropriate PPE use and safe work procedures when handling waste and cleaning materials.
  • Clear and approachable communication skills - able to explain waste-sorting practices to staff and students in a constructive and friendly way.
  • The ability to work independently, manage daily tasks without close supervision, and proactively raise issues or improvement ideas.
  • A current Open C Class Driver's Licence.
  • Forklift License is desirable.
  • A current Blue Card / Positive Notice Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one).
